1st Place Winner - Henry Busby - “Tales from the Junkyard”

The results are in! The three grand prize winners of the 2010 Safety Scholars Contest have been chosen from more than 12,400 online votes. Each winner receives a $5,000 college scholarship and has the chance to have their video air as a public service announcement on television stations across the country.
All 2010 SafetyScholars.com Top 10 Finalists, won a new set of Bridgestone- or Firestone-brand tires for their innovative videos.
And the 2010 winners are…
- 1st Place: Henry Busby, age 20, Tuscaloosa, AL, produced the creative video “Tales from The Junkyard,” which shows the deadly dangers of bad driving habits like texting and driving.
- 2nd Place: Taylor Deeds, age 19, Springfield, MO, chose to convey the dangers of drinking and driving in her video “I’m a Killer,” which shows what can happen when someone thinks he or she is okay to drive, but really isn’t.
- 3rd Place: Tom Leduc, age 18, Dearborn, MI, shows the dangers of speeding in his startling video, “Avoidable Accidents.”
- Critic’s Choice: Zach King, age 20, West Linn, OR, gives a hilarious look at a distracted driving boot camp, “Wooten Camp 101,” that simultaneously entertains while conveying an important message.
’09 Safety Scholars Winners Visit Chicago
Last year’s Safety Scholars winners showcased their videos to automotive journalists from across the country at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show.
- 2009 Grand Prize winner Eric Dachman chose the very topical issue of texting while driving for his video, “Designated Texter.”
- 2009 Grand Prize winner Juliana Hinojosa felt compelled to enter the contest after her older brother, an Iraq war veteran, was killed by a drunk driver.
- 2009 Grand Prize winner Christopher Baugh created a humorous piece in the style of a hip-hop music video focusing on safety tips.
- 2009 Critics’ Choice winner Zach King’s video “Sister Sonata” took an emotional look at how a fatal car accident impacts a sibling.
