I still love being a part of anything creative, whether it is filmmaking, music, or art.
I have loved film from the time I was 5 years old and dreamed of being the next Steven Spielberg. I am currently a film student at Biola University pursuing my dream of directing. I still love being a part of anything creative, whether it is filmmaking, music, or art. I also love teaching others about filmmaking.

Home for the summer, I decided to film a short video for the Bridgestone Safety Scholars Video Contest. Thanks to Bridgestone for letting me be a part of this year’s contest and to all my awesome friends who helped make this video!

I wanted my film to be memorable, because I loved the idea that my work could help others around me. If I could save one person, then I was successful.
Prior to college, I played on the basketball team, swam for 13 years, participated in gymnastics, cheerleading, and tennis, and ran track and cross country. I have always been interested in acting, but not until high school did I realize I’d rather be behind the camera, focusing my attention on production and editing. While attending Central High School, I became intimately involved in the media program. In 2009, I was awarded the Mid-America High School Student Emmy award and placed second in the nation for my documentary on community placements following incarceration.

Due to my success in film, I chose to attend the University of Missouri, where I am now a sophomore studying journalism with an emphasis on strategic communications, which consists of advertising, public relations and film studies. Through the journalism school, I found out about this wonderful opportunity that Bridgestone Americas was offering.

I try to let every image I create tell a story and draw in the viewer.
From a very young age I started drawing anything and everything that caught my eye. Since then, I’ve developed my visual sensibilities through drawing, painting, and filmmaking. I try to let every image I create tell a story and draw in the viewer. With the Bridgestone Americas Safety Scholar Video Contest I tried to find evocative images that told a story about the irresponsibility of reckless driving.

I am a Tuscaloosa native and a junior at the University of Alabama double majoring in film and American studies. I’ve spent my college time painting, creating numerous short films and a short documentary about high school seniors in a rural Alabama town shot over a five-month period. I plan on continuing to develop my skills and pursue a career in cinematography.

In my work, I compel people to look outside of themselves by illustrating life from an objective, and sometimes, harsh point of view.
I want my video to make an impact on drivers everywhere, a rude awakening of what could happen to anyone who is driving too fast to have complete control of their vehicle. Let it be a reminder that an automobile can be a lethal weapon if carelessly driven.

I am a freshman at Columbia College. It’s an honor to have my video recognized and I hope it will prevent some accidents.

More than 12,400 online votes determined grand prize winners; each receives a $5,000 scholarship, set of Bridgestone tires.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 17, 2010) – Three college students now have $5,000 for tuition, thanks to their winning video submissions in the Bridgestone Americas Safety Scholars Contest. The company recently announced the winners of the national safe driving competition, now in its fourth year.

The three winning videos beat out more than 1,300 other entries from 16-21 year-olds across the country to become one of the 10 finalists. They then secured the most votes from the public to win the grand prize. More than 12,400 votes were cast on www.safetyscholars.com to determine the winners. The three grand prize winners and all top ten finalists’ videos can be viewed on the website.

“We were blown away by the creative talent and passion these student video producers showed for the issue of teen driver safety,” said Angela Patterson, digital media coordinator, Community and Corporate Relations, Bridgestone Americas, who also manages the company’s teen driver safety initiatives. “These videos are so compelling and created by students for students, so we are very excited to share these messages with young drivers and all motorists and ultimately make the roads safer for everyone.”

In addition to receiving a $5,000 college scholarship and a free set of Bridgestone-brand tires, the grand prize winners have the chance to have their video used as a public service announcement (PSA) on television stations across the country. These PSAs are supported by Bridgestone Americas in cooperation with Driver’s Edge, an independent, non-profit hands-on safe driving course that’s offered free of charge to teens in select U.S. cities. The 2009 Safety Scholars PSAs have aired more than 17,000 times on TV and cable stations across the United States, reaching an audience of more than 66 million viewers.

About the winners:
Henry Busby, a 20-year-old from Tuscaloosa, Ala., produced the creative video “Tales from The Junkyard,” which shows the deadly dangers of bad driving habits like texting and driving. His video closes with this reminder: “Every day, there are hundreds of stories that are cut short. Buckle up. Drive safe.” Busby is an incoming junior at the University of Alabama.

Taylor Deeds, a 19-year-old from Springfield, Mo., and rising sophomore at the University of Missouri, chose to convey the dangers of drinking and driving in her video “I’m a Killer,” which shows what can happen when someone thinks he or she is okay to drive, but really isn’t. The video ends with three young people looking at the camera and saying, “I’m a killer,” because they caused a wreck that took a life.

Tom Leduc, an 18-year-old from Dearborn, Mich., is a freshman at Columbia College in Chicago. His startling video, “Avoidable Accidents” shows the dangers of speeding. A little boy’s life is cut short because of someone driving too fast. It closes with this reminder: “Some accidents are completely unavoidable. This was not one of those accidents.”

After seeing the creativity and quality of Zach King’s submission, the judges decided to name his video titled “Wooten Camp 101” as this year’s critic’s choice winner. King’s hilarious look at a distracted driving boot camp simultaneously entertains while conveying an important message.

Online voting begins today; grand prize winners receive a $5,000 scholarship, new tires and a chance for their videos to be turned into a TV Public Service Announcement.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 15, 2010) – We’ve all heard the warnings. Wear your seat belt. Don’t text and drive. Keep your eyes on the road. And still, car crashes are the leading cause of death and injury among 16- to 21-year-old drivers in the United States. It’s important to deliver the messages in new and compelling ways. That’s the purpose of the Bridgestone Americas Safety Scholars video contest: empowering students to create driver safety videos that will make a difference and save lives. Now it’s up to the public to pick the scholarship winners by voting for their favorite videos in the online voting, which begins today.

A panel of judges selected the top 10 most compelling videos, which were chosen from 1,375 entries received by Bridgestone Americas from 16 to 21 year olds across the United States. Choices were made based on how well the videos compel viewers to be more safety-conscious drivers and how effectively and creatively the message was communicated.

The top 10 videos are now posted at safetyscholars.com. The public can vote online through Aug. 5 to determine the three grand prize winners, who will be announced Aug. 17. Finalists’ videos are also available for viewing on social networking sites including Facebook, YouTube and MySpace.

“The passion and creativity displayed in these videos is so incredible that it makes the judges’ decisions very difficult,” said Angela Patterson, digital media coordinator, Community and Corporate Relations, Bridgestone Americas, who also manages the company’s teen driver safety initiatives. “Safety Scholars once again proves to be an innovative campaign that empowers young drivers and allows us to demonstrate our commitment to safety behind the wheel.”

In addition to receiving a $5,000 college scholarship and a free set of Bridgestone brand tires, the grand prize winners have the chance to have their video used as a public service announcement (PSA) on television stations across the country. These PSAs are supported by Bridgestone Americas in cooperation with Driver’s Edge, an independent, non-profit hands-on safe driving course that’s offered free of charge to teens in select U.S. cities. The 2009 Safety Scholars PSAs have aired more than 13,000 times on TV and cable stations across the United States, reaching an audience of more than 51 million viewers.

In addition to Safety Scholars, Bridgestone Americas has invested in a number of innovative driving and tire safety education initiatives specifically targeted at young drivers. The Bridgestone brand serves as presenting national sponsor of Driver’s Edge. Bridgestone Americas has also aired a series of tire safety PSAs featuring Mario Andretti, legendary racer and Firestone spokesman. Most recently, the company created a new website — www.teensdrivesmart.com— to provide online resources to young people and their parents to help them become better, safer drivers.
